Before Hotel Frangos, circa 1800s – 1900s

Hotel Frangos’ history can be traced back to 1856, right to when it was a mere plot of land, bought by Joseph Collet. The Bank of Victoria graced this land initially, marking the first of many to occupy this prime spot. Following suit was The National Bank, but there ended the reign of banks upon this land; as more service-led businesses like a drapery and then a bar took hold.

It was only in 1888, that we saw the first sprigs of the famed Hotel Frangos as we know it today! Called the Coffee Palace, the hub was transformed into part-restaurant and part-guest house. The tiny Town Hall Hotel shared a wall with this establishment at the time, and was ultimately absorbed to be renamed the Belvedere Hotel. 1889 saw the addition of a weatherboard section, expanding the capacity to 35 bedrooms, and later in 1905, an extra 54 rooms. What sounded like quite the flourishing enterprise, took a sudden downturn when in 1957, an arson attack was attempted by the then owners! Arrests were issued and in 1973, the building was passed on to be refurbished into the famed landmark it is known as today — Hotel Frangos.
